Denise Purciello, 59, of Orange, was arrested Thursday in connection with the theft and use of the woman's credit card, according to Shelton Police Det. Richard Bango.
The theft occurred while the elderly woman was shopping on May 8 at the ShopRite store in Shelton and had her purse in her cart, Bango said.
The victim immediately called her bank to cancel her credit cards, only to learn that her card was already used at TJ Maxx on Bridgeport Ave., he added.
Video surveillance was obtained from the store and a woman can be seen stealing the purse out of the victim’s cart while her back was turned.
A photograph of the woman and the vehicle was released to the press requesting help in identifying her.
After the press release, a tip was called into the Shelton Police Department regarding the woman and the vehicle. The Detective Bureau investigated the tip and were able to identify Purciello as the woman who stole the purse and fraudulently used the credit card, Bango said.
Purciello was charged with felony larceny and theft of a credit card. She is being held on a $1,000 bond.
